How Reddit crops your image

Preview cards are landscape in most feeds and may show a smaller thumbnail on compact layouts. Keep important type inside the safe area.

Tall or square files may be letterboxed or cropped. Prefer 1.91:1 for link posts.

Caches and scrapers can keep an older card. Prefer a new image path when artwork changes.

Three common Reddit mistakes

  • NSFW or gated pages

If the crawler cannot see the public HTML, Reddit will not show a rich preview. Make tags available without login.

  • Relative og:image

Use an absolute https URL that returns 200 anonymously.

  • Conflicting duplicate og:image tags

Themes and SEO plugins can emit multiple images. Keep one absolute https og:image.

What to put in the tags

Set og:image, og:title and og:description. Host a stable PNG or JPG under about a megabyte.

Check the first HTML response with the [link preview checker](/link-preview-checker/) before you post.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about Reddit preview images.

What size should a Reddit link preview image be?

Start with 1200×630 pixels (about 1.91:1). Treat this as a recommended Open Graph default until Reddit publishes a dedicated preview-image size.

Why does Reddit show my link without an image?

Usually a missing or relative og:image, a blocked fetch, or a page the crawler cannot access. Fix the public tags and try again.

Does Reddit need twitter:card?

Prefer Open Graph for the website. Twitter tags alone are not a reliable Reddit contract.

Can I reuse my Facebook OG image on Reddit?

Yes. One landscape OG file usually works across Facebook, Slack and Reddit. Change the path when you redesign.
