Pinterest image sizes for pins

Last updated: September 20, 2026.

Size figures on this page are placeholders. They are not marked verified because we have not re-checked Pinterest’s current documentation.

Pinterest is not a 1.91:1 link-preview network. Pins are vertical. A file that is perfect for Facebook will look like a thin letterbox on a board, or it will be ignored in favor of another image on the page. This guide is about pin artwork and rich-pin images, not about using Pinterest as a substitute Open Graph host. The 1000×1500 figure in the table is a placeholder we have not re-checked against Pinterest’s current help docs, so it stays unverified. 2:3 is still the ratio most publishers aim for. If you also need a Facebook card, export two files: a tall pin and a landscape og:image. Tag each URL with the file that matches the destination.

How Pinterest crops your image

Boards display a tall tile. Pinterest may trim a little from the top or bottom depending on the module, but it will not turn a landscape OG file into a healthy pin. Design in 2:3. Put the product or idea in the upper two-thirds; some surfaces clip the lower edge more than the top.

Rich Pins pull extra metadata from Open Graph or oEmbed. The image they show is still a raster. Do not point og:image at a 1200×630 title card on a recipe URL you expect to pin well — pinners will save a weak crop. Give the article a dedicated pin image even if og:image stays landscape for other networks.

Pinterest compresses uploads. Fine 8-point type on a busy photo will not survive. Use fewer words and stronger contrast than you would on a desktop OG card.

Three common Pinterest mistakes

  • Using the OG landscape file as the only pin

It will look like a banner ad on a board. Export 1000×1500 (or another 2:3 size you verify later) with a short on-image title.

  • Collages with ten tiny panels

At phone width each panel is unreadably small. One idea, one image, one line of type.

  • Saving from a page that blocks bots

If Pinterest’s crawler cannot fetch the image URL, the pin fails or falls back to a random on-page picture. Keep the file on a public https URL with a stable path.

Pins versus og:image

og:image remains the Facebook/LinkedIn/WhatsApp contract. Pinterest is a different object. On a blog post you can ship both: a 1200×630 OG file in the head, and a 2:3 pin that people save from the article body or a Pin It button. Do not expect one canvas to win both jobs.

When you use the generator’s Pinterest preset, you are making a tall graphic to download and host. You still have to upload it to Pinterest or include it on the page. This site does not publish Pins for you.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about Pinterest preview images.

What size should a Pinterest pin be?

A 2:3 portrait, listed here as 1000×1500 pixels, is the working default until we verify Pinterest’s help article. Do not use 1200×630 as your pin. Keep text large and high-contrast because boards shrink the tile.

Should og:image be 1000×1500?

Usually no. Other networks will crop a tall pin badly. Keep og:image at a landscape Open Graph size and maintain a separate pin file for Pinterest.

Does Pinterest read og:image?

Rich Pins may read Open Graph metadata, but the saved pin should still be a vertical raster you control. Relying on og:image alone produces weak boards.

Can I use PNG for pins?

Yes. PNG is fine for type on a flat background. JPG is better for photographs if the PNG is heavy. Stay under the (unverified) file-size figure in the table, and well under a megabyte when you can.
