Instagram image sizes for linked URLs
Last checked: October 2026.
Recommended sizes for Instagram. Based on how these apps render Open Graph images; no official spec is published.
Instagram feed posts, Stories and Reels use their own upload crops. This page is only about the Open Graph image on a website URL that Instagram may show when someone opens or shares that link (for example via a link sticker destination). Based on how Meta apps render Open Graph images; an Instagram-specific link-preview pixel contract is not documented here yet. Design the website og:image at 1200×630.

How Instagram uses your website image
The website’s og:image is not the same as an in-app photo upload. For the URL itself, keep a landscape 1.91:1 file.
Story and Reel canvases are tall. Do not reuse those files as og:image for the destination URL.
Caches on Meta apps can keep an older card. Prefer a new image path after redesigns, then retest the live URL.
Three common Instagram mistakes
Using a 1080×1920 Story as og:image
Link destinations need a landscape OG file. Export a separate 1200×630 image for the website.
Relative og:image on the destination page
Use absolute https. Relative paths fail for crawlers that fetch the linked site.
Confusing bio link apps with Open Graph
A link-in-bio tool may show its own card. This guide covers the destination page’s og:image tags.
What to put in the tags
On the destination site, set absolute og:image, og:title and og:description. Host a stable PNG or JPG.
Validate with the [link preview checker](/link-preview-checker/) and, when relevant, Facebook Sharing Debugger.
Create an Instagram-friendly OG image
Opens the generator with the Instagram size preset selected. Image export stays in your browser.
